Also ignore this if your phone supports USB HDMI output, an adapter for that would cost much less, my phone didn't. If you want to try your hand at fixing the screen then go for it but it really wasn't worth it with my phone. If you aren't going to get a moto mod phone I suppose you could purchase a projector to recover your data then return it. Since my new phone is also compatible with moto mods I now have a projector for it. Hopefully you aren't in my position but maybe this can help someone out there. Just like that I got a display and was able to recover everything. After I was past the lockscreen I couldn't see, I attached the moto mod and turned it on. Its a bolt-on camera upgrade that outfits your Moto Z or Moto Z Play with. I plugged a keyboard into the phone using the adapter, hit the fingerprint scanner and typed in my pin (I had restarted the phone so I couldn't just use fingerprint) then I hit enter. The Insta-Share Projector, Incipio offGRID Power Pack, JBL SoundBoost speaker. Instead of doing that again I bought a Moto Insta-Share Projector and a USB OTG adapter compatible with the Moto Z Play which ended up costing around the same as a new screen. I had already replaced the screen once too, it was not fun and it didn't seal good leaving the loudspeaker distorted. I bought a new phone thinking I could just pop the SD card in and have my photos back but I forgot I had set it up as internal so the new phone wouldn't recognize it. I also didn't have USB debugging enabled so no recovering with ADB. I don't use Google Drive so I didn't have my photos backed up. I recently dropped my Moto Z Play and somehow the digitizer broke and the whole screen went black.
